Popular Mechanics' Bunk by Kevin Barrett Popular Mechanics' book Debunking 9/11 Myths is the most-cited piece of alleged evidence that the 9/11 truth movement is wrong, and the official story is true. This is ironic, because Debunking 9/11 Myths does not cite ANY evidence to support its assertions. Evidence consists of public documents—writings, audio or video tapes, and so on—that can be checked. But Popular Mechanics claims most of its information comes from alleged "personal interviews," which cannot be checked. When it does cite a public document, it fails to provide a page number, making it virtually impossible for the reader to verify its claims. Thus the whole book is a series of bald assertions unsupported by evidence. These assertions are consistently false or distorted (which explains why no evidence was cited to support them) beginning with the statement that the book will debunk all of the key claims of the 9/11 truth movement. In fact it leaves out half of the key claims, while lying about or distorting those it includes, and adding plenty of "straw man" attacks on claims that are not central to the 9/11 truth movement's case. Here are just a few of PM's falsehoods: *Their assertion that US military radar cannot see and track planes whose transponders have been shut off—meaning that NORAD expects enemies to attack us with transponders turned on! * Their assertion that "not one of the leading [alternative] conspiracy theorists has a background in engineering, construction, or related fields" -- tell that to Richard Gage and the hundreds of Architects and Engineers for 9/11 Truth (http://www.ae911truth.org). * Their claim that "jet fuel burns at 2000-2200 degrees F" suggesting that this was the temperature of the WTC fires--when in fact open-flame jet fuel burns at a much lower temperature, jet fuel was not the major fuel source for the fires, and NIST's tests show the actual steel temperatures in the fire-affected floors to have been around 500 degrees F or below. * Their absurd claim that confined (thus oxygen-starved) fires in the debris pile could have easily produced molten steel weeks after the collapse. PM's collection of omissions and distortions is at least as laughably bad as the original 9/11 Commission Report. Like the Report, it richly deserves to be reviled by patriots and truth-lovers everywhere. Hey little-cousin Chertoff--your work is the kind of fish food that only bottom-feeders can stomach. Into the harbor with it! * * *

review was written for a three-minute presentation at the
