The preface of veteran Middle East CIA agent Robert Baer's 2002 book See No Evil ends on an astonishing note: "The other day a reporter friend told me that one of the highest-ranking CIA officials had said to him, off the record, that when the dust finally clears, Americans will see that September 11 was a triumph for the intelligence community, not a failure."
9/11 an intelligence triumph ? If the horrific, nationally televised mass murder of almost 3,000 Americans, the destruction of our most prominent architectural monument, the successful attack on our nation's top military command center, the controlled demolition of our Constitution, and the initiation of a series of military quagmires that are destroying our economy and hence our world primacy was an “intelligence triumph,” maybe we need more intelligence failures. Patrick Fitzgerald, will you please give Baer's journalist friend the Judith Miller treatment so we can learn the identity of this top-ranking CIA official who considers 9/11 an intelligence triumph? Perhaps he could be persuaded to kindly explain to your grand jury exactly what he meant.
If Baer's information is accurate, our “intelligence community” is run by lunatics at best, psychotic traitors and war criminals at worst. The mind boggles at the image of our top-ranking military and intelligence officials sitting around on September 12th, 2001, chortling and celebrating their “intelligence triumph.” Too bizarre to be true? Well, everybody responsible for the apparent failures on 9/11 has been promoted, while whistleblowers and honest anti-terror agents like Sibel Edmunds and Colleen Rowley have been gagged, fired or given the cold shoulder. All of the evidence indicates that the top brass, especially Donald “9/11 is an Opportunity to Remake the World” Rumsfeld, and Dick “Undisclosed Location” Cheney, really do view 9/11 as an “intelligence triumph.”
George Orwell, a nonpareil expert on the use and misuse of language, must be rolling over in his grave. Orwell would undoubtedly have agreed with George Carlin that “military intelligence” is a bigger oxymoron than “jumbo shrimp,” since the word military means “of or pertaining to the pointless mass murder of our fellow humans in ritual territorial contests that have gotten further and further out of hand since the dawn of agriculture,” an activity that no person of intelligence would want anything to do with. But even Orwell and Carlin would have a hard time digesting the notion that our top military intelligence brass views 9/11 as an “intelligence triumph”—which would make that brass about the oxy-est bunch of morons ever to ply the so-called military intelligence trade.
Orwell, more than any other 20th century writer, saw the evil and absurdity toward which false, lying language must lead. Calling things not by their true names, nor even by pale euphemisms, but by their opposites, if done with a nudge and a wink, is known as irony; if done by the powerful to dupe the powerless, it is termed Orwellian. Calling the torture center the “Ministry of Love” while holding that “war is peace, freedom is slavery, ignorance is strength,” like claiming that the post-9/11 neocon blitzkriegs are part of a “war on terror” conducted “for freedom and democracy,” is to indulge in Orwellian abuse of language. The “war on terror,” of course, is really a war of terror, and its main purpose is to reduce or eliminate, not defend, democracy and liberty. Likewise, the purpose of the “Patriot Act” is to attack the liberty and democracy that were the goals of the actual patriots of 1776, while the “Department of Homeland Security” is charged with maintaining the population in a state of insecurity so that they may be more easily controlled.
The one discordant note of honesty is struck by FEMA, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, whose name admits that its role is to manage emergencies—and emergencies are better managed if you know they're coming, as FEMA apparently did on 9/11, or if you and your governmental colleagues create them yourselves—perhaps by blowing up levees in poor New Orleans neighborhoods to enable citywide ethnic cleansing and massive profits for rebuilders and speculators; mailing US military anthrax to Congressional Democrats and spraying peace marchers with Rabbit Flu virus in a run-up to a full scale managed biological attack; and otherwise preparing for managing the wave of protests and riots that will follow the Peak Oil depression that is about to overwhelm our economy. Since the main way FEMA managed relief efforts in New Orleans was by mercilessly obstructing them, perhaps it is time for Americans to decide that they do not want their emergencies to be managed by the federal government. Please stop giving us these managed emergencies; the natural ones are bad enough! haps it is time to eliminate FEMA, that police-state-in-waiting, and establish an emergency relief agency in its stead. Unfortunately, given the Orwellian bent of our current neocon regime, any Disaster Relief Agency would undoubtedly devote itself to exacerbating, rather than relieving, the suffering caused by disasters. One imagines DRE agents plying city waterways in fishing boats, periodically leaning over gunwales to hold flood victims' heads underwater—which would, if you think about it, relieve the victims' suffering in fairly short order. It would also relieve the suffering of Barbara Bush and others of her ilk, who are understandably pained to see their cities playing host to déclassé disaster victims.
There remains, despite all this official lunacy, one way to make an intelligence success out of 9/11. If the American people can summon up the collective intelligence—along with a dollop of courage, wisdom and goodness—to figure out what was done to them on that dark day, and by whom, Donald Rumsfeld's infamous characterization of 9/11 as an “opportunity” may yet turn out to be true, though not in the sense he intended. If enough real intelligence is brought to bear on 9/11, we may gain the opportunity to not only give our psycho killer rulers the bum's rush, but to intelligently transform our society into something capable of meeting the formidable challenges of the future.
Whether enough time remains for the American people to pull its collective head out of its TV-bloated derriere, and apply some real intelligence to what the neocons dismissively call the real world, remains to be seen.

A few hours after this article was finished, I came upon this story from the October 6th, 2005 New York Times , in which a ex-top CIA official claims that the intelligence community's handling of 9/11 was "good, positive, extraordinary." Though murdering almost 3,000 Americans in a bogus "terrorist attack" is certainly extraordinary, calling it "good" and "positive" is a bit of a stretch. Mr. Pavitt and his colleagues who think 9/11 was an "intelligence triumph" really ought to be more discreet, or they may find themselves at the business end of a treason trial and a hangman's rope.

Mr. Pavitt, who retired as head of the (Central Intelligence) agency's directorate of operations in August 2004, said Wednesday that Mr. Goss had done "the right thing" by deciding not to seek disciplinary action against him and others named in the report.
"There has been a great deal of accountability; how many times can we go through it again?" Mr. Pavitt said. "How many times do we need to try to hold a G.S.-13 or, for that matter, a former director, responsible for 9/11? We've said, yes, mistakes were made, but there was an awful lot that was done that was good, that was positive, that was extraordinary."

The Myth of 9/11 MUJCA-NET co-founder Kevin Barrett is writing
a book entitled The Myth of 9/11: An American Muslim Speaks
Out. Dr. Barrett, an Arabist specializing in the analysis of

9/11 is a myth, both in the popular sense of an untrue story, and
the scholarly sense of a founding narrative legitimizing a particular
social order. Preview and comment on The
