TUN DR. MAHATHIR MOHAMAD: Press Release - global effort to condemn wars and to promote the peaceful resolution of the present US / Iran dispute and all future international disputes

Tun Dr. Mahathir bin Mohamad at the Kuala Lumpur War Crimes conference (Feb 2007) with former Rep. Cynthia McKinney, Leuren Moret, Matthias Chang (r) and Alfred Webre (l).

After the devastation in Iraq where more than a million Iraqi citizens have been killed, millions displaced as refugees in neighbouring countries, and the barbarity committed in Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo Bay, one would have thought that war as an option to resolve international disputes would be rejected except as a last resort or in self-defence.

But war drums are beating loudly again and young men and women are being trained to wage another murderous war, this time against another hapless country, Iran. The alleged crime, for which the world's citizens are called in to support, is that Iran is producing nuclear weapons.

They lied regarding the WMD in Iraq.

Now, despite statements by the IAEA that there is no evidence of Iran embarking on any nuclear weapons programme, the war mongering nations are once again claiming otherwise and demanding this to be an excuse for war.  Clearly they are lying again.  Once again they want an excuse for going against another oil rich country which is also a Muslim country.

Israel has now called for the dismissal of El Baradei for reporting the truth about the current state of affairs in Iran.  Britain's Prime Minister has however issued a statement that Britain would support and lead in the war against Iran. President Bush and Vice-President Cheney are equally, if not more belligerent in calling for a war against Iran.

War is mass murder.

It is uncivilised. Is the world going back to the age when disputes for honour were settled by duels in which the more proficient with weapons always had the upper hand? Are we to condone the mass killings of innocent civilians because of the folly and blood lust of their government leaders as was the case in World War I and World War II?

Let us not repeat a century of killings and mass murder by WMDs with another century of mass murders and the killings of the innocent.

Peace and peaceful resolutions of disputes must prevail.

I therefore call upon all world leaders, secular and religious, to join me in this global effort to condemn wars and to promote the peaceful resolution of the present US / Iran dispute and all future international disputes.

God willing our efforts will succeed.

A Real Terrorist is on the Loose

Humanity and Mother Earth are in Danger

By: Ali Baghdadi

(A speech at Northeastern University, Chicago)

I am greatly honored to be speaking to you.  I must tell you from the start that I will not beat around the bushes.  I am not here to entertain you or to please you.  Truth sometimes hurts.  You are adults.  You can take it.

I am a Palestinian, an Arab and a Muslim.  That means I belong to the people that the United States government has designated as enemy.  I belong to the camp of the “bad guys”, who are punished, murdered, tortured and even raped.  But I am also an American.  I belong to the camp of the “good guys”, who are doing the murder, torture and rape, who are waging what President George W. Bush calls a crusade, against my people, the “terrorists”.  Israel is an integral member of this camp.  As a matter of fact, the American Israeli Political Action Committee (AIPAC), a Zionist-Jewish lobby in Washington, is leading this camp.

My wife for forty three years is an American.  My six children and eleven grandchildren know no other country on Earth except the United States of America.  Two of my kids have served in the military, and were honorably discharged.

Let me put it this way.  I do belong to the people who hate you.  Ironically, I also belong to the people, who are hated, not only by Arabs and Muslims, but by almost the rest of the world, including Europeans.  The United States is hated not only by Muslim masses, but also by Arab rulers who enjoy Washington’s military and political support.  Yes, America is hated by its “loyal friends”, King Abdallah of Saudi Arabia, King Abdallah II of Jordan, President Mubarak of Egypt, and al-Maliki of Iraq, among many others.  They hate, because the White House humiliates them, despises them and pushes them around.  George W. Bush has given them one choice.  Either you are with us, or with the “terrorists”, their own people.  They are unwilling to face the destiny of those who challenge the American empire.  Unlike Saddam Hussein, they chose to be living cowards and traitors, instead of becoming great martyrs loved and honored by the Arab and Muslim people.  The fact remains that, when their service is no longer needed, their master will trash them, will flush them into the sewage of history.  America has no permanent friends, only interests.  Today, anti-Americanism throughout the world is the norm, not the exception.

During a two day visit to my city of birth, Jerusalem, and as my family and I were attempting to enter the Holy Sepulcher, the holiest church in Christianity, Palestinians told me, point blank, straight to my face, that they hate me; that they hate all Americans; that I am one of them, an enemy to Arabs and Muslims.  The fact that I have been defending Arab and Muslim causes, particularly the Palestinians’, for forty seven years, made no difference.  I do understand.

A day earlier, at the Jordan River entry point to my native lands, Palestine (Israel), I was treated by the Israeli authorities quite differently.  Though none of us meet the profile of a Muslim “terrorist’, my son and I have no beard, and my grandson is too young to have a beard; though my wife is blond, has a low profile and peaceful disposition; though my wife, daughter and granddaughter had no headscarf; and though we all carried U.S. passports; we waited for seven hours in front of the passport control window before we were allowed in.  In the eyes of the Israeli authorities, we are all Palestinians, not Americans.  We are all potential terrorists.

I don’t blame the Palestinians, my fellow countrymen and women for hating me.  President Jimmy Carter describes the Tel-Aviv government as the worst occupational regime.  Nelson Mandela and Bishop Desmond Tutu speak of Israel as worse than the former apartheid government of South Africa.  The present South African government agrees.

In the West Bank and Gaza, Palestinians are murdered daily.  They are being starved to death. They all live in a prison.  Their homes and agricultural lands are bulldozed.  Their olive and citrus trees are uprooted.  More than 550 Israeli military checkpoints are scattered all over the West Bank alone.  A trip between two villages that normally takes fifteen minutes last for five to seven hours. Palestinian babies die at military checkpoints while their mothers are on their way to a hospital to deliver.  Palestinians’ drinking water is stolen and diverted to Jewish swimming pools in illegal settlements built on their confiscated lands.  Their economy is in shambles.  The little of what they clench unto of their remaining land is actually a living hell. More than 60% of the work force is unemployed.  Palestinian children are seen searching in Jewish garbage dumps for food to eat. Recently, Palestinian students who had come home to visit were not permitted to return to their universities abroad.

Three weeks ago, despite protest made by the United Nations, the world community and international human rights organizations, food, electricity and fuel to Gaza were cut in half, by Israeli government, as a mass punishment, because the Palestinians chose Hamas as their representative, in an election that was described by former President Carter, as free and democratic.  President Bush, who told us that his invasion of Afghanistan and Iraq is prompted by his desire to spread democracy, labels the Palestinian Islamic resistance movement, Hamas, as a terrorist organization with which the United States will not deal.  Even Israeli military disagrees with Bush’s claim.  According to a Nov 11, 2007 news report published by Haaretz, a leading Israeli newspaper, Israeli paratroopers testified that “in all parameters, we are facing an army, not gangs.”

The Zionist controlled U.S. mass media allege that Israel is not morally or legally obliged to cater to needs of Palestinians who are blockaded, who are under occupation, and all their air, sea and land entry points are controlled by Israeli forces.  Israel continues to disavow responsibility for the human catastrophe Palestinians are facing, in violation of international law.

No wonder that my family and I saw, by the Damascus Gate to the Old City of Jerusalem, Palestinian crowds who were not allowed to pray at al-Aqsa and the Dome of the Rock mosques, shouting, pleading upon the President of Iran, Mahmoud Ahmadi Nejad, to fire Iranian missiles towards their Israeli occupied city, out of no concern for their own lives.  No wonder why, after experiencing the intolerable living conditions of Palestinians, my children and my grandchildren in my company, stood helplessly by, and expressed approval and support, despite the heavy presence of trigger happy Israeli soldiers.  No wonder why, during the 1991 war of aggression ordered by Bush senior, against Iraq, West Bank Palestinians danced on the roofs of their homes and cheered Saddam’s missiles lighting the skies on their way to Tel-Aviv and Haifa.  No wonder why, after they were forcefully driven out of over 550 towns and villages in 1948, and the remaining 22% of their lands occupied in 1967, did Palestinian youths, males and females, find no alternative but to explode themselves amongst Israeli soldiers.  Palestinians have no army. They have no tanks, no jet fighters, no apache helicopters, and no weapons of mass destruction, but their enemy does and uses.

Iraq as a country has been completely destroyed.  Its seven thousand year civilization has been shattered.  Its infrastructure has been ruined.  Its industrial machinery, 750 billion dollars worth, was disassembled and sold as scrap to neighboring countries.  Its water, air and land have been poisoned.  It resources are being robbed.  Since Bush’s “mission accomplished” declaration on aircraft carrier The Lincoln in the Gulf, 1.2 million men, women and children have been murdered, a death toll that rivals Rwanda genocide.  This brings the total number of Iraqis losing their lives from a combination of the two wars led by Bush the father and the son, and including the 13 years of illegal sanctions imposed on the country, to 3.5 million.  Iraqi widows number over 3 million.  Iraqi orphans exceed 5 millions.  70% of Iraqi children suffer traumatic stress syndrome due to death and destruction they are exposed to daily.  Though Iraqis are known to be proud, educated and hard working people, thousands of mothers and children are forced into prostitution to survive.  According to the U.N., Iraqi refugees, including the internally displaced, reached 4.4 million, two millions in Syria alone.

A month ago, in an interview that appeared on 60-Minutes CBS TV, a U.S. field commander said that the military is authorized to bomb and kill civilians if a suspected Taliban fighter was in their midst, provided that the number of those civilians is less than thirty.  If the number of unarmed civilians was higher, the approval of the U.S. Secretary of Defense or the President would become necessary.  I am almost certain that those two men have never said no to the murder of Muslims and destruction of Muslim countries.

Even the Afghani leader, Hameed Karazai, a puppet and a traitor, stated on the same program that he had complained to the U.S. President and had asked him “to stop bombing us”.  Remember that Karazai is the White House man.  Until he was handpicked by Bush and Cheney to become president of Afghanistan, the man was employed by Unical, an oil giant, here in the United States.

You must have heard a question that Americans often ask, “Why do they hate us?”

In a speech given to the Congress, George W. Bush answered, because they hate our freedoms. We are told that they hate us because we are rich.  They envy us because we stand for democracy and freedom.  They resent us because we are the most powerful nation.  They are jealous of our achievements and accomplishments.  They are loners like Timothy McVeigh.  They are intolerant; and their religion is primitive, irrational and violent.  Certainly, these statements are insults to the intelligence of the American people.

Americans, particularly the Christian Zionists, ignore the fact that Arab Christians share Muslim sentiments.  They also hate America.

“Why do they hate us?”  Americans should have known why.  Americans have allowed the Israeli Jewish lobby to hijack U.S. government in the service of the Israeli policy of aggression and expansionism.  No Republican or Democrat candidate can win without the blessings and approval of this lobby.  We have been pouring billions of dollars into aid to insure Israel’s military superiority over all Arab armies.   We protect Israel in the United Nation, despite its refusal to implement U.N. resolutions, and its disrespect to international law.  We have also allowed Israel to be the only state in the Middle East that possesses nuclear weapons aimed at all major Arab and Muslim cities.  In addition, this illegal and genocidal war was waged on behalf the Zionist state, to prevent Iraq of becoming a threat and a challenge to its military power and dominance.

Israel invaded southern Lebanon in July of 2006.  Israeli-U.S. F-15 and F-16 fighters dropped over 1.25 million American cluster bombs on the civilian population.  Lebanese cities and villages were bombarded, day and night.  The infrastructure, including highways, roads, and bridges south of Beirut, was destroyed.  Food, water and fuel storages were hit.  Apartment buildings, schools, hospitals, clinics and houses of worship were leveled to the ground.  One million Lebanese refugees were compelled to flee, with little food or water.  It took 33 days of killing and destruction by the Israeli army, which is described as the fourth most powerful army in the world, before the U.S. agreed to a U.N. resolution for a cease fire.

Notably, Americans who volunteered to go to Lebanon to help were there only to rescue the surviving animals.

Five weeks ago, many of the residents of southern California, who escaped the deadly fires that resulted in over a half million displaced individuals, left almost everything behind, but brought with their animals, their dogs, cats and even fish.

Love for animals is not confined to Americans.  It is universal.  I do love animals.

Again, I must tell you the truth.  Americans show unusual love and mercy towards animals.  Those who are cruel to animals are punished and jailed if convicted.  But what is really disturbing is the fact that the great majority doesn’t show similar love and mercy towards people, towards fellow men and women.  Death and destruction has been an integral part of Western culture and Western history.

I am not a psychologist or a psychiatric.  However, I do know that that is sick.  It is also sickening.  It makes me vomit.

Despite tight censorship, Americans saw the destruction of Baghdad, and images of the assault on the city of Falujah, which was nearly razed to the ground.  They saw the devastation of the entire city.  They saw Iraqi corpses blackened with Napalm and phosphorus bombs, which are outlawed. They heard cheers and laughs of U.S. soldiers as they bring down mosques and minarets.   They saw the marines shooting unarmed, wounded and harmless civilians that had taken refuge in houses of worship.  Though the number of active Iraqi resistance fighters is no more than 20,000, the U.S. army fired 1.5 billion small arms rounds in one year, more bullets than can be manufactured.  The very little of what Americans have seen is enough to demand a Nuremberg-like trial for the President, the Vice President, the Secretary of Defense, the Secretary of State and their advisors, as well as top generals in the Pentagon.  U.S. citizens have failed to do their part.  They have been silent, and silence is complicity. They are not prepared to dedicate a fraction of the time wasted on stupid TV programs to learn a little about world affairs and the serious crimes against humanity that their government is actually committing.

Americans are generally indifferent and heartless.  Americans see wars as action movies, computer games, exciting and entertaining.  The 2,000 pounds bombs and ballistic missiles raining down on Baghdad were fireworks.  Victims are numbers and their murder is collateral damage.

The question that puzzles me is, “How many more nations should be invaded and destroyed; how many more cities should be torched and devastated; how many more millions should be massacred; how many more widows and orphans should be left without a supporter; how many more Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo prisons we are going to build; how many more innocents we are going to torture; how many more international laws and conventions our country will be violating, before the American conscience can be awakened and become functional?”

Our “State of the Union” is gloomy and disgraceful.  It is true that there are honorable, caring and courageous American men and women, Christians, Jews, atheists and others, who strongly protest U.S. policy.  It is true that there are Americans who challenge the benefiters of war.  Unfortunately, they are in the tiny minority.  They are seldom seen on major news networks.

In the meanwhile, Bush continues to allege that we “don’t torture” and that “waterboarding” does not cause permanent damage.  Republican and Democratic senators, who should experience this technique only for a minute or two, have just confirmed Mukasey as U.S. attorney general, another victory for (AIPAC), despite the fact that he refused to recognize “waterboarding” as torture. Mukasey, a Zionist Jew who, as a judge, sentenced an innocent blind Muslim scholar for life imprisonment for a crime that he never committed, is now the Secretary of the “U.S. Department of Injustice”.  Under the disguise of combating terrorism, efforts to marginalize Muslims and intimidate non-Muslims of an imaginary enemy, the Los Angeles Police Department has just announced a program to “map” Muslim communities.  Muslims population in the greater Los Angeles is estimated to be a half of a million.   According to recent polls, 53% of the Americans favor expanding the fraudulent ant-terrorism war to include Iran.

I didn’t come here to solicit your support and arouse your sympathy for Arab and Muslim causes. Americans pass the buck.  They cannot escape responsibility.  They put their trust mostly in the hands of criminals, who do not take the legitimate interests of their country at heart and instead, cater to Israeli demands.

Arabs and Muslims will survive.  Eventually they will liberate their lands, control their destiny, protect their resources and catch up in the field of science, and technology.  All indications show that the Bush Empire is collapsing, and Israel, as an apartheid state, will finally disappear.  The year 2007 has been the deadliest for U.S. troops in Iraq, and also Afghanistan.

Israel was forced to retreat from Lebanon.  None of its objectives have been realized.  Hezbollah is stronger now than ever.  Military maneuvers held last week, have shown beyond a doubt the readiness and preparedness of the Lebanese resistance fighters to defend their country.

Though they are facing 160,000 U.S. troops and 180,000 U.S. mercenaries that are called contractors, Iraqi resistance has dragged the United States into a quagmire.   Bush has been begging neighboring countries, including Iran, to give a hand.  “Support the Troops” stickers, have been disappearing, not because Americans are largely against death and destruction.  They want an end to this war because it is costly, and their money is going down the drain.  The real cost is, according to the latest estimates, is 3.5 trillion dollars.  Also Americans are not winning.

What is really tragic is that Americans are generally not concerned about the boys and girls that come home in boxes under the cover of darkness.  They are not photographed.  They are not seen. The overwhelming majority are Blacks, Latinos and poor Whites.  According to official figures, which are too distorted, almost 4,000 of our American sons and daughters have died in vain, died for Israel and big business.  The injured and maimed are approximately 30,000.  Those who suffer brain damage and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder are approximately 48,000.  Soldiers who no longer serve in the front lines are neglected by the “Commander in Chief” of the U.S. Army.  An estimated 200,000 veterans have been homeless at some point in the last year.  Veterans waiting for their disability claims increased from 325,000 in 2002 to 600,000.  Cooper, the head of the agency in charge of veterans’ benefits, an Evangelist, appointed by Bush, proclaimed that Bible study is “more important than doing [my] job.”  Health care for Iraq’s veterans will cost tax-payers 650 billion dollars and is rising.

Bush’s claim that the “surge” mission is working, is another big lie.  Operations usually carried out by U.S. death squads have been intentionally reduced.  U.S. military ground missions and engagements have been greatly decreased.  Fewer road bombs have been exploding because American forces stick to their bases, and no longer roam the streets.   However, airstrikes against heavily populated civilian targets launched in 2007 are four times that of the ones launched in 2006. The U.S. will eventually cut and run as it did in Vietnam, Lebanon and Somalia.  Members of the Iraqi parliament, though they were handpicked by the Americans, want U.S. troops out, now.

In Afghanistan, Karazai is not actually a president but a mayor of a heavily U.S. guarded section of Kabul, the capital.  Taliban resistance fighters are regaining strength and winning.  The British foreign intelligence, MI6, has been working on a deal with Taliban.  NATO has rejected U.S. requests for more troops.

I came here, however, to warn you.  A serial killer, a mass murderer and a war criminal and his gang are all on the loose.  Americans ought to wake up to the truth.  They are in great danger.

George W. Bush is talking about a Third World War, a “nuclear holocaust”, which may bring an end to life on earth as we know it.  "So I've told people that, if you're interested in avoiding World War III, it seems like you ought to be interested in preventing them from having the knowledge necessary to make a nuclear weapon," Bush recently declared.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) that regularly inspects Iran’s nuclear facilities emphasizes that Iran has no atom bomb development program.  The uranium enrichment is for peaceful purposes.  Iran is not a nuclear threat.  Many U.S. experts agree.

The US National Intelligence Estimate (NIE), which coordinates the judgments of the US’s 16 intelligence agencies, refused to yield to Cheney’s demands to remove dissenting judgments on the Iranian nuclear program.

According to a Nov 11, 2007 news report, Micah Brose, a privately contracted interrogator working for American forces in Iraq, near the Iranian border, told the Observer that US military officials are putting huge pressure on interrogators who question Iraqi 'insurgents' to find incriminating evidence pointing to Iran.

According to specialists, Bush is a mad man.  He is a psychopath.  His brain is damaged as a result of years of alcohol dependency.  As a child, he stuffed fire crackers in the mouths of frogs on his family farm, and left them to explode.  The man hallucinates.  He admitted that he talks to God. He told the Palestinian Authority “President”, Mahmoud Abbas, that God told him to invade Iraq to spread democracy.  He is waiting for the green light from his god to strike Iran.  Of course, Bush’s god is big business.  He prays for the oil companies and the war industrial complex.  He gives alms in the form of governmental contracts to his friends, who are robbing the American tax-payers in the billions of dollars.   If he is allowed to push the button, the consequences will be a global disaster. Humanity and mother earth are at great risk.

Reform of Islam is Not Bush’s or the Pope’s business

Interfaith Dialogue Should Focus on Man not God

The Pope Rejects Muslim Outreach

(Speech given at Northeastern University, Chicago, Interfaith Dialogue Day,  Nov 13, 2007)

By: Ali Baghdadi

I was invited to talk to you about Islam.  After serious consideration I declined.   I am the wrong person.  My views about Islam are not the norm.  They are controversial.  A few weeks ago I received an email, an assassination threat, from an Indian Muslim who will be traveling to the United States to accomplish his “holy” mission.  My co-religionist, who works for the Arab American oil company in Saudi Arabia, accused me of being a “murtad”, a renegade.  He was angered by an article in which I stated that Moses, according to archeology, a science, is a myth.  He actually never existed.  Muslims respect Moses as a prophet.  My Indian Muslim “friend”, Z. T. Minhas, an insane and a coward, has not arrived yet.  The U.S. intelligence, which intercepts our electronic, particularly international mail, has not reacted.  Muslims, killing one another, is consistent with U.S. policy.

I was born in Islam.  Documents of old torn up paper that I inherited claim that my family descends from Muhammad, the Prophet of Islam.  I spent the first twenty-three years of my life in the shadow of al-Aqsa Mosque and the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem, which according to the Quran, Islam’s holy book, Prophet Muhammad had journeyed to, and then ascended to heaven, and returned home to Mecca in Arabia, all in one night.  Some influential Muslim scholars say that the journey was only a dream.  Others, with the Dark Ages mentality, insist that it was physical.

For twenty-three years, without any interruption, I listened to al-Azan, the Muslim call for prayer, five times a day.  Prior to starting public school at age 7, I attended a kuttab, a madrasa, a private religious school, at age 4.  The elderly teacher, a sheikh, a former officer in the Ottoman army, dressed in a long black robe and a white turban, was occasionally paid with a few loaves of bread, or eggs, or a live chicken.   My family couldn’t afford it.  I rewarded my sheikh with a daily kiss of his hand, and a prayer, asking God to give him a comfortable and everlasting life in heaven.  At age nine or ten I was able to recite most of the chapters of the Quran from memory.   I studied the Quran, Islamic thought, Islamic history, Islamic culture and Arabic as language at all educational levels.  I also attended lectures on political Islam given underground by some controversial scholars.

Things, however, have changed.  My association with Islam throughout my adulthood has become political and not religious.  I don’t go to a mosque.  As you can tell, I don’t fast.  I have no intention of ever performing the pilgrimage to Mecca.  I suspended giving al-Zakat, charity, when Bush has designated almost all Muslim charitable organizations that aided the orphans and widows in Palestine, Lebanon and Iraq, as terrorists, and forced them to close.

I am not concerned about Islam.   Islam has survived all foreign invasions.  Bush’s crusade will be no exception.   I am, however, concerned about Muslims, as well as Christians, in the Muslim World, who are targeted by the West, particularly the United States government, which possesses the most savage and destructive war machinery in human history.

Usually, I don’t defend religion, but people.  Religion is faith not science.  I insist that every individual has the right to believe or not to believe.  Each man or woman has the right to accept a religion or to reject it.  A person has the right also to choose to be an atheist.  People must be judged by their deeds, and contributions, not their faith.  I stand for justice, freedom, equality, peace, and prosperity for all.  I support women and gay and lesbian rights.

The question that you may ask is why I am here?  What changed my mind?  The answer is the Pope.  Yes, the Pope.

I was greatly disturbed by the Pope, who, citing the Quran as an obstacle, rebuffed a massive outreach effort by Muslims.   Coming at the end of the holy month of Ramadan, three weeks ago, a 29-page letter was sent to leaders of major Christian dominations by 138 high-level Muslim leaders and scholars, representing 1.3 billion Muslims worldwide.  The letter appeals to religious tolerance, dialogue and understanding.   It calls on Christian and Muslim religious leaders to work in unison for world peace, cooperation and prosperity.  It emphasizes the similarities between Christianity and Islam as monotheistic religions.  It speaks of the affinity between the Bible and the Quran.  Both religions worship one God and call for the love of one’s neighbor.

Fortunately, the letter titled “a Common Word between Us and You”, was welcomed by various Christian leaders and institutions.  It was well received by the Baptist World Alliance and the Most Rev. Rowan Williams, Archbishop of Canterbury, Britain.

However, Pope Benedictine’s reaction was negative, and arrogant.  It is also insulting to Christian Arabs, who are culturally Muslims.  He chose to close the door to an idea which was very dear to his predecessor, Pope John Paul II, who, when the Quran was presented to him, bowed and kissed it.

Benedictine’s hostility to Muslims is nothing new.  In his speech in Germany, last year, he spoke of Islam as a violent and irrational religion.  He quoted Emperor Manuel II of the Byzantine Empire, who said that Muhammad had brought only "evil and inhuman" things.

The office of interfaith dialogue established by John Paul II, was shut down, but later, under pressure, was reinstated.

Dr. Karen Armstrong of Oxford, a former nun, who is amongst the most renowned theologians and has written numerous bestsellers on the great religions and their founders, disagrees:

“Certainly not. There is far more violence in the Bible than in the Qur'an; the idea that Islam imposed itself by the sword is a Western fiction, fabricated during the time of the Crusades when, in fact, it was Western Christians who were fighting brutal holy wars against Islam. The Qur'an forbids aggressive warfare and permits war only in self-defense; the moment the enemy sues for peace, the Qur'an insists that Muslims must lay down their arms and accept whatever terms are offered, even if they are disadvantageous. Later, Muslim law forbade Muslims to attack a country where Muslims were permitted to practice their faith freely; the killing of civilians was prohibited, as were the destruction of property and the use of fire in warfare.”

The Vatican says:  "Muslims do not accept that one can discuss the Quran in depth, because they say it was written by dictation from God. With such an absolute interpretation, it is difficult to discuss the contents of faith."

As a precondition for a dialogue, the Vatican demands that Muslims change their belief that the Quran is the word of God.

I say with a great certainty that the Pope’s action and conduct are not inspired by God, on whose behalf, “his holiness” speaks.  It is dictated by politics, racism, ignorance and hatred.  It is a part of the cruel crusade that George W. Bush, has declared against Muslims.  Since his ascension to the papal throne, Benedictine, a former Hitler youth, has been putting the papacy, as well as Christianity, in the service of the U.S. empire.

Muslims are not asking for a theological dialogue.  They are not trying to convince anyone that the Quran was dictated by God himself.  Unlike Christians who are asking Jews to come to the Church, Muslims are not calling on Christians to come to the Mosque.  Muslims are not demanding that Christians abandon the trinity and recognize Jesus only as a prophet.  Though they don’t believe in the crucifixion and vindicate Jews from murdering Jesus, Muslims don’t see any reason for Christians to bring down the cross and raise up the crescent.

Muslims and non-Muslims ought to focus attention on common goals that are more important to humanity than theology, such as world  peace, justice, freedom, equality, love, understanding, respect for one another, tolerance, cooperation, as well as mother earth and the environment.

In Muslim lands, Muslims, Christians and Jews have lived as neighbors for almost fifteen hundred years.  They didn’t dialogue.  They didn’t debate.  They lived in peace and tranquility.  The fact that Christianity and Judaism continued to exist alongside Muslims, who were and still are the majority, speaks of Muslim tolerance.  The fact that Jews throughout the centuries fled Christian lands and took refuge in Muslim countries, demonstrates, beyond a doubt, Muslims’ respect of non-Muslims’ beliefs.

I do admit that the reform of Islam is urgently needed.  But this is not the business of Jews or Christians.  It is a Muslim problem.  It requires a Muslim solution.  It must be addressed and dealt with as a Muslim concern.  Christians and Jews have their own enormous problems to acknowledge and resolve.

George W. Bush has been pushing for a new Islam that welcomes occupiers as liberators and labels oppression as democracy.  He is promoting an Islam that requires his adherents to turn the other cheek to U.S. and Israeli soldiers, who are ordered to kill, maim, torture, burn, and destroy. He has been working hard to restrict Islam to spirituality, only to issues that deal with God but not man.  No jihad!  Jihad is not suicide, which is a great sin in Islam, but a struggle against injustice, oppression, occupation and aggression.  Jihad is a legitimate resistance to daily murder of men, women and children.  Bush’s Islam calls on Muslims to capitulate, kneel down in submission, not the Lord of the Universe, but to the satanic” god” who resides in the White House.  Muslims’ answer came clear, brief and swift, “hell, no.”

Hitler, who proclaimed himself a “Christian” and a fighter for “his Lord and Savior”, didn’t claim to have spoken to God.  George W. Bush did.

"God told me to strike at Al-Qaeda and I struck them.  And then he instructed me to strike at Saddam, which I did. And now I am determined to solve the problem in the Middle East.”

However, God warned Bush, “This crusade, this war on terrorism, is going to take awhile."  Here, Bush’s destructive god is right.  “The mother of all battles” will continue until all foreign troops return home.

His “obedience” to his killer god has resulted in the murder of over a million Iraqis.  Iraqi death due to war and economic sanctions are three and a half million.  Iraqi orphans number five million and widows are three million.  Six million people fled Iraq or were displaced.  Museums, libraries and educational institutions were bombed and ransacked.  Their contents were stolen or burned. Thousands of scholars and scientists were assassinated.   Seven thousand years of human civilization is leveled to the ground.  The only ministry building that was left standing is the Ministry of Oil.  What a coincidence!

What about Western achievements the Pope attempts to protect?  The Church cannot take credit for the awakening, enlightenment, progress, and freedoms men and women enjoy in the West today.  On the contrary, the Church resisted and continues to resist reform and change until this very moment.

Muslim leaders who enjoy the support and blessing of the United States are the obstacle for social change and development.  The Saudi dynasty continues to forbid women from driving, and deny Saudi citizens the right to vote.

However, Islamic reform is taking place slowly but steadily.  Polygamy was outlawed in Tunisia.  Dr. Hassan al-Turabi, a former head of the Sudanese National Assembly, one of the most influential thinkers that I had the honor to meet several times, issued a fatwa, a religious ruling, which gives the right to Muslim females to marry non-Muslims, and for women to lead Muslim prayers.

Revolutionary change is taking place in Iran, U.S. enemy number one.  A divorced woman has the property right to a half of the wealth her husband amassed while being married.  Sex change is legal.  The surgery is paid for by the state.

I must remind you that four Muslim countries, Turkey, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Indonesia had women as heads of state.

I regret that the Pope’s stand has forced me to end my public silence on issues pertaining to religion, and make comparison between faiths.

The Pope wants Muslims to tailor Islam to fit Judeo-Christians values.  However, in terms of peace, universal brotherhood, equality, freedom, logic and simplicity, Islam is far more rational and progressive than Christianity and Judaism.  No Vatican.  No sainthood.  No priesthood.  No present day miracles.   No spiritual healing of the sick.  Those who may claim to have the power of healing, end in a mental institution or a jail.  The Old Testament, an integral part of the Bible, as described by Christian and Jewish researchers and historians, is blood and sex.  The God of Israel, Jehovah, orders his “Chosen People”, to destroy burn, kill, enslave, and rape virgins of the goyem, non-Jews.

Furthermore, Islam’s religious affairs are not a hierarchy for clerics.  Islamic affairs are not confined to graduates from al-Azhar University or other Islamic institutions.  As a matter of fact, the greatest Muslim scholars are intellectuals, such as writers, physicians, engineers, lawyers, and other professionals.

According to an interpretation the Old Testament, Noah's three sons were the founders of the populations of the three known continents, Japheth/Europe, Shem <> /Asia, and Ham/Africa.  Ham’s children had been "blackened" by sin and a curse.  Ham made fun of his lying down, drunk and naked father.  Noah’s two other sons who covered him were blessed.  Their descendents were not black.

In Islam black is not a curse, but a beautiful color in the rainbow of the human race.  Muhammad declared that all men are equal.  The Quran says, “O mankind!  We (God) created ye from a single (pair) of a male and female, and made ye into nations and tribes, that ye may know one another, (not that ye may despise each other).  Verily, the most honored of you in the sight of God is he who is the most Righteous of you.”  Chapter 49, verse 13.

Islam has no confession and no intermediary.  A man, a woman or a child has direct and private line of communication with God, free of charge, anytime and anywhere.  In the Quran, God stresses that He is close to all.  He responds if he is called.

In Islam, no one represents God on earth.  No one is infallible.  Muhammad, Jesus, Moses and all prophets are not divine, but humans.

All efforts and promises for a better life made by the Vatican and other Christian groups to convince Muslims throughout the world to convert have failed.  What disturbs Christian missionaries is the fact that Islam today is the fastest growing religion.  According to the Seattle Times, Shortly after noon on Fridays, the Rev. Ann Holmes Redding ties on a black headscarf, preparing to pray with her Muslim group.  Redding, who until recently was director of faith formation at St. Mark's Episcopal Cathedral, has been a priest for more than 20 years. Now she's ready to tell people that, for the last 15 months, she's also been a Muslim.

To multiply the number of his constituents, Benedictine, in his visit to Latin America, last year, demanded from its poverty stricken natives not to use condoms.  When it comes to sex, what or how, in the privacy of their bedroom, has always been the job of a married couple, not Muslim clergy.

The Quran reveres Bible prophets, not insults them.  The Old Testament presents Abraham as a pimp.  He gave his wife Sarah to the Pharaoh to sleep with and enjoy.  In return, the Pharaoh granted him slaves, cattle, silver and gold.  Abraham repeated the same trade with one of the kings of Jordan.  What a bargain.

Read the Bible.   I can go on and on and on.

Religion, particularly Judaism and Christianity which were written with fire and blood, have brought more evil and less good to humanity throughout history.   Interfaith dialogue should not debate theology.  It should work to end death, destruction and misery.  Dialogue should concentrate on building bridges of good will and coexistence.  It should put less emphasis on God and more on fellow man.

Muslims are condemned for their rejection to Western values.  The question is why should they?  They have their own values that were developed over seven thousand years of civilization.  The decision to drop the two atom bombs over Hiroshima and Nagasaki took, according to President Truman, a snap of a finger.  Non-whites’ life is worthless.  A couple of weeks ago, in Israel, actually occupied Palestine, a young woman was savagely beaten by five of her fellow students of the Torah, because she refused to move to the back of the bus.  Muslim men promptly evacuate their seats for women, anytime and anywhere.  Muhammad assured his followers that Paradise is underneath the feet of mothers and entry is allowed only by their blessings and approval.  Those values should remain.

Islamofascism, a new word coined by Norman Podhoretz, a former editor of Commentary Jewish magazine, the home of the neoconservatives.  Bush loves the new word and sings it like a puppet, to drum up American support against Muslims, and to wage a new Zionist-white supremacist war against Iran, which insists on using nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.  The October 22nd to 26th  Islamofascism Awareness Week organized by the Jewish lobby and the neo conservatives, on 100 campuses, turned out to be a great disaster.  Students protested and heckled the speakers.  David Horowitz, author of Unholy Alliance: Radical Islam and the American Left <;redirect=no> ), Jump to: navigation <> , search <>

Who received more than $15 million in handouts from ultra conservative foundations, was forced to flee.  In the sixties, he was a Marxist and a member of the new left.  His Jewish parents were long-standing members of the Communist Party.  Horowitz later discovered that leftism doesn’t pay. The Zionist propagandist describes so-called Islam as the moral and historical equivalent of Nazism.   Margaret Kimberley, a writer and a senior columnist, together with a group of influential anti-fascist activists, are calling for a counter-event: "Christian/Jewish Fascism Awareness Week."

With the collapse of the Soviet Union, Islam has replaced communism as an imaginary enemy, and thus justified the astronomical military spending in service of big business.  It does not take a nuclear or a space scientist to conclude that the 911 tragedy was a home-made conspiracy.  It is naïve to believe that a man with a turban on his head and a cane in his hand hiding eleven thousand miles away in the caves of Tora Boro is responsible for such an almost impossible mission.  51% of the American people question the official story.   Evidence points a finger at Bush, Cheney, their lieutenants, the Israeli Mossad and certain segments in U.S. intelligence.  We must demand the creation of an independent commission of scholars, scientists, engineers, and experts on demolition and intelligence to find the truth and bring the criminals to justice.

The watch list of suspected terrorists, compiled by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has swelled to over 755,000.  Certainly, if you oppose war and stand against genocide, regardless of your religion, or nationality, you can be sure that you are on this list.  Ironically, it mainly contains scholars, academics, writers, journalists, artists, and anti-war activists.

What about Islamic “radicalism”?

Fifty years ago, in most Arab countries, one could seldom see a Muslim girl or a woman covering her hair.  Today, one can rarely encounter a Muslim female without a headscarf.  I must admit, all are beautiful, with or without a cover.  However, I do hate the burqa, a veil, which covers the face.  It is not a religious requirement.  Those who impose it, as well as the women who accept it, bring shame and disgrace to the overwhelming majority of Muslims.

Muslims females wear the scarf mostly by choice.  It is mainly a sign of political protest.  It is a rejection to Western values, Western culture, Western domination, Western hypocrisy and Western occupation.  It is a stand against theft of resources, ethnic cleansing, and genocide to which Muslims are subjected.

Muhammad said, “If you see evil, your duty is to stop it by your hand.  If you cannot, you must oppose it by your mouth.  But if you cannot, you should undo it in your heart.”  In Muslim lands, Muslim fighters oppose U.S. and Israeli tanks and bombers with gun, and sometimes by an explosive belt.  In the Quran, God says, “Think not that those who fall while resisting aggression will ever die.  They are alive, in the company of their Lord.”  Muslims believe that that is the highest form of martyrdom and the greatest honor.

Finally, I have been a U.S. citizen for over forty years.  My country of origin, Palestine, is occupied, and my country men, women and children are killed daily.  The United States has become my second home.  I am grateful.  Two of my children served in the U.S. military.  Both took the oath to defend their country.   Both were honorably discharged.

Regardless of my convictions and beliefs, Islam has formed my identity.  It remains a source of my personal behavior and conduct.  I will not abandon my heritage, my culture, my roots, or my people.   The F.B.I. visited me twice, a year ago.  I refuse to be intimidated.   As long as the crusade against Muslims continues, as long as there is war on earth, and as long as there is hunger and disease, the least I must do is to not be in the silent majority.

GWB, Sept. 2001,

The Disease of Moderate Muslims

Yamin Zakaria

Life is not always black and white, but there are times when we are forced to adopt a certain position. The words of George Bush after 9/11: “you are either with us or against us” is one such example, when it became necessary for Muslims and non-Muslims to state their position. Because, when a vicious criminal gangster demands loyalty or compliance, a response is required, otherwise silence will constitute acquiescence.

For the Muslims as followers of Islam, the response should be naturally along the following lines: we are not with you Mr. Bush, make no mistake about it, we will never be with you, because our allegiance will always lie with Islam.

Let alone being an ally, why would anyone want to be even associated with: an illiterate drunk, a mass murderer, a religious-fanatic who talks to ‘god’ (Satan), a liar (WMD in Iraq), a cheat (Florida election 2000) and a known thief [1]. Mr Bush, you are no different to the savage adversaries of the noble Salahuddin al-Ayubi (Saladin). Like your ancestors you have a fork tongue, whilst you talk of being a friend, your media is full of hate-filled preachers inciting the masses to commit acts like flushing the inimitable Quran down the toilet to the obscene porn-torture that we have seen in Iraq (Abu Ghraib).

Those Muslims who chose to ally with Bush will be classified as the ‘moderates’ and the rest by de facto are the ‘radicals’. For the radicals there are numerous other pejorative labels like extremists, fundamentalists, militants, and terrorists. This bifurcation of radicals and moderates is one that has been defined to suit the interests of the West, long before 9/11.

Being a moderate or radical has no relationship with how devout the individual is. The distinction is marked by how one views the American led adventure and its role in the Muslim world. If you oppose the American agenda, you are a radical, otherwise you are a moderate. Depending on the level of opposition expressed to the US-led foreign policy it determines ones position within the radical spectrum. For example, those who confine to political activity are less of an extremist than those who engage physically.

So what is the response of the moderate camp with respect to the demands made by Bush? Many of them will claim to oppose Bush and the so-called ‘terrorists’, showing their confused mindset; the more sly ones will use different language depending on whom they are addressing, they call it ‘diplomacy’, ‘wisdom’ etc.

Some of the more extreme moderates will claim to sit on both camps and they do not see a contradiction since Bush is pro-Islam according to them. Yes, you can even have Iftar at the White House, naturally it must be true! One of their leaders with beard like a Rabbi or an Orthodox priest even claimed that even Hilary Clinton embraced Islam at his hands! They elaborate their position by stating that the father of George Bush, who led the first Gulf War as the leader (Ameer) of Jihad to liberate Kuwait from the infidel Saddam Hussein. So, George Bush junior is simply continuing that ‘Jihad’, thus supporting Bush is supporting real ‘Jihad’!

However, the vast majority of the moderates see the source of the problem as being an internal one, they argue, if the Muslims, especially the radical ones altered their behaviour by ceasing physical resistance, Islam would not get a bad press, and the west would eventually embrace Islam, the conflict would cease to exist. Listed below are some of their main arguments which elaborate their position.

a)         The good Muslim image syndrome and the media.

The moderates argue that acts of resistance gives Islam and Muslims a bad image in the media, but the media is not a neutral body; it is the mouth piece for the American led imperialism. In fact, it is the media that is constantly inciting and legitimising the much greater levels of violence against the Muslim masses. The journalists, editors, and commentators are the real violent pack of wild hyenas, who write with the ‘ink’ drawn from the innocent blood of the women and children of Iraq, Afghanistan and Palestine. Like a pack of ugly hyenas, they devour those who are voiceless whilst singing songs of free speech to them from their monopoly position as columnists and editorials. They are constantly encouraging state-terrorism against the Muslims, preaching a message of hate under the toxic influence of militant liberalism.

From the recent Danish cartoons episode, one would have thought the moderates would have learnt by now that the media and the fanatical liberal camp does not need a reason to attack Islam and Muslims.

The media’s portrayal of the violence is biased by any standards and it functions to justify colonial violence; for example it conveys the image that the F16 Pilots dropping huge bombs displaying shock-and-awe as a justified response of a ‘just’ war (remember those real WMDs in Iraq facing the mythical WMDs of Israel!), but the suicide bombers in Iraq with their tiny bombs are criminals. These simpleton moderates should know that the acts of resistance are not unilateral or one-sided; the context is the retaliation to much larger levels of violence inflicted by the West.

b)         Retaliation

Even as the bombs drop in Baghdad, seeing the carnage in Iraq, Afghanistan, Palestine, and the porn-torture in Abu-Ghraib by the soldiers of freedom and democracy, the moderates argue against those who are engaged in the noble acts of resistance. Their logic is that Muslims should not lower themselves to the level of the Americans by retaliating in kind. In other words, these moderates are happy to march into Jenin, Fallujah, and Kabul, then wave their so-called moral flag of victory standing over the dead bodies of the innocent Muslims rather than defend them in the first place! They derive their so-called higher ‘moral’ values from the cowardice nature of turning the other cheek, which defies human reason and contradicts Islamic values.

War and peace between nations is a bilateral relationship at the very least, so how can one argue for adopting a unilateral position regardless of how the other party is conducting. Yet, the confused moderates expect the Muslims to have an absolute moral position in warfare regardless of how the enemy is behaving. This means if the enemies bomb our cities, we should not bomb theirs, because the ‘wisdom’ of the moderates is that Muslims should have higher ‘values’ and not kill civilians. This type of advice sounds like the ethos of the Dodos that marched to their own extinction. If we apply the above logic to say trade, this means if a nation supplies faulty goods, the Muslims should still pay them as they have an absolute moral position of keeping to their side of the bargain.

International relationship whether it is trade, diplomacy or warfare is based on reciprocity, and this the reality of how it function. This is why the Quran says clearly “fight them as they fight you” and not how you think they should be fought! If they use explosives we too use that. If they kill our civilians we too retaliate in kind to deter them from killing more of our civilians. This conforms to reason, reality of life and to Islamic texts.

c)         The killing of ‘innocent’ people.

The moderates selectively and out of context cite the evidences, where the Prophet (SAW) and His successors (Khalifs) forbade the killing of women and children in the course of war. However, that was the initial position adopted by the Muslim army and it is not absolute, otherwise it would contradict other evidences. For example, the Prophet (SAW) also permitted the use of catapults in war knowing that it would lead to the killings of non-combatants. Likewise, under that absolute prohibition of killing non-combatants, Muslims could not engage in warfare today, as the use of high explosives would inevitably lead to losses of non-combatants. Therefore, adopting such a position would result in instant capitulation, which is forbidden, as Muslims are required to defend themselves adequately. The Quran explicitly commands the Muslims to defend and to deter the enemy, and to deter the enemy one must match or excel the firepower of the enemy and be prepared to use them in retaliation of kind.

The notion of innocent people in times of conflict is not defined by any laws or principles but by the conduct of the parties involved. If a nation attacks the civilians of another nation then by definition their own civilians become legitimate targets. These shameless moderates will selectively point out the far fewer numbers of civilians (who are collectively re-electing war mongering governments) killed in retaliation, and concurrently remain silent towards the much greater number of innocent Muslims killed by the Anglo-US-Israeli axis of evil. Of course, the moderates will tell you of their opposition to the killing of innocent people by pointing the retaliatory acts of 3/11, 7/7, 9/11, whilst the killing of Muslims as simply a foreign policy that they dislike!

d)         Armchair Jihadist versus the armchair hypocrites (traitors).

Some of the moderates feeling no shame in their lack of support for resistance to the Anglo-American-Israeli aggression take a step further by criticising even those who provide political support. They use the slur of armchair-Jihadist in describing them, and demand that they should practice what they preach. Voicing support is also part of Jihad and thus they are practicing what they are preaching. Likewise not everyone who was pro-War over Iraq ended up in the battlefield. This shows their hypocritical nature as these moderates make these arguments only to the Muslims and not the non-Muslims who are voicing support for war, perhaps a natural consequence of suffering from the good Muslim image syndrome!

If one is unable to engage physically for any reason at the very least one can provide support by voicing their opinions. That is far better than the moderates who sneer at them, thus they show disdain for Jihad or any from of resistance to the aggression; this is an act of cowardice and treachery. Like cowards and hypocrites, their so-called support for Palestine or Iraq is a lie, as they are constantly calling for resistance to cease without providing an alternative. Such shameful language and behaviour is not even seen in the non-Muslims who are openly supporting the resistance against imperial aggression.
