Discerning Truth for 9/11
There is strong social pressure to avoid talking about the contradictions in the 9/11/01 official story. Many people find it difficult to think that the U.S. government and major news sources would not tell citizens the full truth, despite documented untruths that have emerged about other major events such as the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, torture policies of the U.S. and Pentagon influence on the media. Hopeful assumptions and instant judgments might replace close scrutiny of the official story.
A significant number of individuals and groups of engineers, aviation professionals, scientists, academics, military/intelligence personnel and others have challenged or refuted the official story of 9-11. Since this doubtful story was used to justify hundreds of thousands of deaths and injuries, respected religious leaders have urged people of faith to learn and discern the truth about these painful events. What should be the faithful response from Methodists, Christians and other religious denominations that have a strong history of working for social justice?

Meeting organizer Buzz Davis, Veterans for Peace member, explained, “We have two excellent thinkers on national politics and impeachment. Dr. Robert Bowman, Ph.D. in aeronautics, Lt Col, US Air Force retired and John Nichols, author and columnist. Co-organizer and UW-Madison Professor Joe Elder will serve as moderator. These experts will speak and then the meeting is open for discussion.”
The Madison meeting is part of Dr. Bowman’s national speaking tour advocating impeachment and change. Bowman stated, “We must take back America from the corporate interests. Our immediate goals are to prevent a war on Iran, end the occupation of Iraq, and start impeachment proceedings against President Bush and Vice President Cheney.”
Nichols is a national expert and author on impeachment and associate editor of the Capital Times. He said, “Congress has failed to hold the president accountable. I will discuss where we are at and where we should go on accountability."
Bowman, a Vietnam veteran, was Director of Advanced Space Programs Development during the Carter presidency. President Reagan took this program and turned it into his offensive “Star Wars” program. Bowman then retired from the military and became an early and open critic of Reagan’s Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI). On the McNeil-Lehrer News Hour he called SDI “…the ultimate military lunacy, easily overwhelmed and vulnerable.”

Since 2001, many scientists, military and intelligence personnel and others have questioned the official account of the 9/11 attacks and this has been largely ignored or ridiculed by the mainstream media.
Dr. David Ray Griffin , a United Methodist Seminary Professor has become one of the foremost spokespersons for 9/11 Truth and has been and is supported by fellow theologians William Sloane Coffin (now deceased ), John Cobb, Jr. Rosemary Radford Ruether and others. Since the media has not been doing its job, Dr. Griffin strongly urges churches to be instrumental in explaining the number of ways in which the 9/11 Commission Report has been found inadequate. The hoped for outcome would be that if people see the falsity of the official story, they will press for a new investigation.
However it is difficult to consider this information and many reject it out of hand and decline to look further. We as Americans have a strong emotional attachment to the official story and have been exposed to vivid images that seem to have cemented the official version in our minds, despite evidence to the contrary.
In order to learn more about this , a member of First United Methodist Church at 203 Wisconsin Avenue in Madison will be offering a 6 week film/discussion series starting September 11, on Tuesday evenings from 7-9 pm . Free parking will be available in the Manchester Ramp after 6:30pm. I hope you can join us for individual weeks or the whole series. A description of each week follows below.
September 11 The movie “Press for Truth”, which runs 83 minutes and exposes the government’s and media’s failure to answer the many important questions of the Family Steering Committee. Six family members tell their story, revealing that 70% of their questions were not answered by the final 9/11 Commission report. Paul Thompson, an independent researcher asks questions regarding conflicting media reports. Does this indicate a clear pattern of government deception ?
September 18 The movie “Improbable Collapse”, which runs 1 hour presents information from Steven Jones a former professor of physics at Brigham Young University who points to many features that cannot be explained by the official theory, and from Kevin Ryan a chemist and engineer, formerly with Underwriters Lab, until he raised concerns about the NIST report. Others also offer arguments for a controlled demolition hypothesis for the Twin Towers and WTC #7.
September 25 This 2 hour film of a panel discussion entitled ”9/11 and American Empire, Intellectuals Speak Out”, includes theologian David Ray Griffin, CIA analyst Ray McGovern and Sociology Professor Peter Phillips and Peter Dale Scott a former Canadian diplomat. Some of the topics addressed are perceptions of 9/11 Truth seekers, an inside view of the 9/11 Commission and discussion of the Global Domination Project.
October 2 This session will focus on a Religious perspective highlighting the strong urgings of religious leaders to demand truth and to oppose imperialist government policies that are in direct opposition to religious beliefs. A short film may be available. References from “Christian Faith and the Truth Behind 9/11 “ and “9/11 and American Empire, Christians, Jews and Muslims Speak Out “ will be used.
October 9 A film entitled “Celsius 9/11”, which runs 2 hours provides excerpts from an International Citizens Inquiry in 2004, gives several Canadian perspectives , reviews examples of U.S. invasions and questions the overall concept of the War on Terror.
October 16 To end on a slightly lighter note, “Liberty Bound” will be shown . This 90 minute film looks at the balance between democracy, capitalism and facism with some humorous anecdotes interspersed. Interviews with Howard Zinn and Michael Parenti and Michael Ruppert are included.
