Dear Editor: Your article Friday on the massive pro-divestment-from-Israel outcry at the recent UW investment hearings gives exactly the same amount of space to the (very few) people with the (very bad) anti-divestment arguments as to the (very many) people with the (very good) pro-divestment arguments.

During the South Africa divestment campaign, when a huge crowd favored divestment and only a few opposed it, would The Capital Times have given equal space to the tiny pro-apartheid minority? If not, why is The Capital Times, a supposedly left-leaning paper, shilling for the tiny pro-Israeli-apartheid minority who attended the hearings?

Just before the first Gulf War, roughly 200,000 people filled the streets of San Francisco with a raucous anti-war message, while fewer than 50 showed up at a local park for a pro-war rally. The next day's San Francisco Examiner was split down the middle, with the left side covering the anti-war masses and the right side giving the same amount of space, and a bigger picture, to the 50 pro-war demonstrators.

But the corporate media do not always follow the "equal time for both sides" rule. In New York, half the population believes that top U.S. officials conspired to commit mass murder and high treason on 9/11, while the other half does not (Zogby poll, 8/29/04). Though the 9/11 truth forces have equal numbers, and better arguments, so far they have not been able to get a word edgewise into the New York Times.

Selective use of the "two sides to every issue, and both sides should get equal time" approach to journalism makes a mockery of your profession.
