A Monstrous Hoax Has Been Found Out/America Jesus Torture: The Truth-Telling Art of Joseph Nechvatal

Posting this at MUJCA risks offending some of our audience. Some culturally conservative Christians may not like Nechvatal’s adaptation of the crucifixion story. Some culturally conservative Muslims may not like representative religious art of any kind—especially when it depicts the crucifixion, an event that the Qur’an seems to question, at least in its received Christian meaning. And some Jews may hear a terrifying “the Jews did it!” in evocations of the crucifixion and 9/11. 

So why post this? First, it is first-class, finely-wrought work that powerfully addresses our shared post-9/11 situation. Second, MUJCA is a place for absolutely frank, utterly honest interfaith dialogue concerning 9/11—a place for “speaking the unspeakable” (see my essay “Interpreting the Unspeakable: The Myth of 9/11” in 9/11 and American Empire v.2: Christians, Jews and Muslims Speak Out.) Third, the art world is an excellent place for cutting through the dominant pablum and kitch and sheer mindless numbness that dominates post-9/11 culture. High art, at its boldest, tells sometimes painful truths, shakes up its initially complacent, uncomprehending audiences, and is eventually lionized and feted when the culture finally catches up with the artist’s insight—a point I made in comparing the upcoming Madison 9/11 truth conference to the Salon des Refusés. 

After three years of trying to interest American churches in 9/11 truth, I have come to the conclusion that Joseph Nechvatal understands Jesus’s radical message—a message which, summing up the message of all of the prophets before him, annihilates the petty lies and egotistical illusions of empire and religious bureaucracy, in service to an absolute commitment to truth—far better than the vast majority of America’s religious professionals do.
